Adults worry
about holding their jobs as technology outpaces the skills they worked
so hard to learn. Such problems have generated libraries full of educational
theories. But the problems persist.
The basic fact is that students fail to learn
because no one ever taught them how to
learn—that is, how to identify the barriers to learning and
how to overcome those barriers.
In the 90s, the radio had been a
useful resources in the teaching and learning listening and speaking at Gambian
Lower Basic schools(LBS). Until 1994 when the television station was
established and almost all households and some private schools listed it as a
basic need.
However, the public schools still
have a radio or two to teachers disposals but to a different utilization. The
radios are use for just playing cassette with the Jolly Phonics songs recorded
as a reinforcement in the teaching of the sound of the letters of the alphabet.
With the introduction of the TV, the radio had become an obsolete teaching
and learning resource in the Gambia especially.
The teaching of Drama, songs,
poems etc. had also become very rare in schools. The absence of the above
phenomena has created gaps between the skills in communication thus making it
difficult for students to comprehend oral comprehension passages. The teaching
and learning activities of listening and
speaking has been conducted in the abstract without the presence of any
authentic material for assimilation to the children’s environment and that
place students in a dilemma of ‘’ to be
or not to be.’’
The reading resources learned this
week has created an uncountable acknowledgement of the numerous web-sites that
will surely enhance and reinforce the future lessons on aural/oral skill
building of learners.
As for the experience with
creating my delicious page I can now manage all my teaching and learning
resources and at the same time creating a backup for all my valuable
information. Delicious has come to save
us from corrupted file and external drives.
Bravo to
technology!!!
